Our congregation, St. Johannes Lutheran Church, has partnered with Next Steps of South Carolina and The Navigation Center to support a vital ministry in the Charleston area. The Navigation Center is a non-profit that began by serving military veterans and has since expanded to help anyone in crisis. The Center's mission is to empower our most vulnerable neighbors by helping them navigate the complex system of services needed to rebuild sustainable, independent lives.
By providing a volunteer counselor and financial assistance, we join a powerful, collaborative network of over 70 organizations dedicated to this work. It is through this partnership that we can be part of true, lasting life change. Here are a few more stories of our neighbors who have been helped by this shared work.
Eddie is a 28-year-old man who is actively rebuilding his life after recovering from health problems. Currently residing at Star Gospel Mission, he has recently started a new job at Arby's and is working as many hours as possible while actively searching for full-time employment. His determination to get back on his feet is evident in his commitment to both his current work and his job search.
Eddie needed help with his rent to bridge the gap until his first paycheck arrives next week. We were glad to provide that assistance, giving him the stability he needs as he establishes himself in his new position. It was encouraging to meet someone so focused on moving forward and building a sustainable future. We are confident that Eddie's work ethic and determination will serve him well as he continues to rebuild his life.
Annie is a sweet 69-year-old great grandmother whose story is one of extraordinary resilience and faith. She has devoted herself to raising her great grandchild, who has grown into a good student and plays running back on his high school football team. Her pride in him is evident and well-deserved, as she has provided the loving foundation that has helped him thrive.
Annie has faced unimaginable tragedy in her life—all three of her sons have been murdered. Yet she has remained remarkably positive as a person and steadfast in her faith in God. Recently, when she became very sick, she had to pay for her medications entirely out of her own funds, which strained her limited budget and left her behind on her electricity bill.
We were honored to help Annie with the remainder of her electric bill. In the face of such profound loss and ongoing challenges, her strength and faith are truly inspiring. It was a privilege to support someone who has given so much of herself to raise her great grandchild and who continues to face life's difficulties with such grace and positivity.
