Our congregation, St. Johannes Lutheran Church, has partnered with Next Steps of South Carolina and The Navigation Center to support a vital ministry in the Charleston area. The Navigation Center is a non-profit that began by serving military veterans and has since expanded to help anyone in crisis. The Center's mission is to empower our most vulnerable neighbors by helping them navigate the complex system of services needed to rebuild sustainable, independent lives.
By providing a volunteer counselor and financial assistance from St. Johannes and Next Steps of South Carolina, we join a powerful, collaborative network of over 70 organizations dedicated to this work. It is through this partnership that we can be part of true, lasting life change. Here are a few more stories of our neighbors who have been helped by this shared work.
Lisa (head scarf) came to The Navigation Center with two needs: help with her electric bill and help finding a better job. She is pleasant, a high school graduate, and clearly capable of more than her current part-time hours allow. We were glad to help with her electric bill, and The Navigation Center is already working to connect her with better employment opportunities.
Sometimes the most important thing we can do is show up for someone at the right moment and point them toward the next open door. That is exactly what happened for Lisa, and we are hopeful about what comes next for her.
Susan's (t-shirt) story begins with real heartbreak. After eight years together, her beloved partner suddenly died. As if that loss were not devastating enough, his family refused to let her participate in the funeral. The grief was simply too much, and she was unable to work for a period of time.
But Susan did not stay down. With the help of counseling, she found her footing again. She was recently hired at Boeing in an electrical maintenance position that pays very well. She has come a long way. She just needed a little help with a utility bill that had fallen behind during the hardest stretch. St. Johannes and Next Steps were glad to provide that help.
Susan's story is a reminder that grief can knock anyone down, and that the right support at the right time can help someone find their way back. We are so glad she did.
We have to say, Renee's child stole the show. John, who helps people find jobs at The Navigation Center, could not resist playing with the little one during our visit, and honestly, none of us could blame him. It was one of those moments that reminds you why this work matters so much.
Renee is a loving mother of two who works part-time and would love to work full-time if she can find hours that still allow her to care for her kids. The Navigation Center has been helping her search for a better job. In the meantime, she had fallen behind on her electric bill and was facing disconnection. St. Johannes and Next Steps agreed to provide enough to keep the lights on for another month while she works toward something more stable.
Renee is doing her best with very little help. We were glad to be part of her support system, even for just a moment.
Some situations arrive with a sense of real urgency, and Tina's was one of them. She is 25 years old and is currently hospitalized for mental health treatment, with discharge expected tomorrow. She is scheduled for eviction this Friday. And her 8-month-old baby is in DSS custody.
To get her baby back, Tina needs a safe and stable home. Another outreach program is already working to help her find one, but they needed a little additional financial assistance to make it happen. St. Johannes and Next Steps agreed to provide that help.
This is what it looks like to work for justice in real time. A young mother fighting to get well, fighting to keep her home, fighting to get her child back. We are honored to be part of the network that is fighting alongside her.
Bob is 62 years old, disabled, and lives alone outside of Charleston. He volunteers to help the homeless. Let that sink in for a moment. A man living on a disability check and a small custodian's salary at a local church gives his time to serve people who have even less.
But unexpected home repairs and the rising cost of everything caught up with him, and he found himself behind on his electric bill. St. Johannes and Next Steps were glad to help. Bob was very thankful.
There is something beautiful about being able to help someone who spends so much of his own life helping others. This is the body of Christ at work, neighbors caring for neighbors, all the way down the line.
One of the things that makes this ministry more than just a handout is moments like this one. A woman we had seen the previous week came back, not for more financial help, but for the budgeting assistance we had offered.
We sat down together and went through her finances carefully, helping her map out a plan for the immediate future. We also arranged for her to meet with a bankruptcy attorney to explore her options. She left with a clearer picture of her situation and a path forward.
This is exactly the kind of lasting change The Navigation Center and this ministry are built for. Not just keeping the lights on today, but helping people build a more stable tomorrow.
