Our congregations, St. Paul's Lutheran Church and St. Johannes Lutheran Church, have partnered with Next Steps of South Carolina to support a vital ministry in the Charleston area. We work with The Navigation Center, a non-profit that began by serving military veterans and has since expanded to help anyone in crisis. The Center's mission is to empower our most vulnerable neighbors by helping them navigate the complex system of services needed to rebuild sustainable, independent lives.

By providing a volunteer counselor and financial assistance, we join a powerful, collaborative network of over 70 organizations dedicated to this work. It is through this partnership that we can be part of true, lasting life change. Here are a few more stories of our neighbors who have been helped by this shared work.

Supporting Robert and His Family Through a Difficult Season

We met Robert (Husband and Wife), an 81-year-old man, and his wife during a particularly challenging time in their lives. They are lovingly caring for two grandchildren while managing the financial strain of his wife's recent back surgery. With her unable to work during recovery, their already limited income was stretched even thinner, causing them to fall behind on their electric bill.

We were honored to step in and help cover part of their electric bill, providing some relief during this difficult season. It was a privilege to support this devoted couple as they continue to care for their grandchildren with such dedication, even while facing their own health and financial challenges.

A Fresh Start for Carol

Carol (Necklace and Bracelet) is a determined 29-year-old mother who has recently started a new job that pays a fair wage. She is raising her 2-year-old child on her own, without child support, but has the valuable help of a cousin who provides childcare while she works. After working hard to secure her own apartment, she discovered she needed to clear up an old electric bill before she could fully settle in.

Several organizations came together to help Carol with this obstacle, and we were pleased to provide additional assistance. It was encouraging to see her taking such positive steps toward independence and stability for herself and her child. We were glad to be part of helping her move forward into this new chapter.

Advocating for Stephanie's Rights

Stephanie (Hand on Arm), a 33-year-old mother of two, came to us facing a complex legal situation that had been affecting her family for years. Though she has been the primary caregiver for her children since separating from their father a decade ago, the social security payments meant for the children have continued going to him because no formal custody arrangement was ever established.

We were able to connect Stephanie with the legal team that visits The Navigation Center, and she made an appointment to begin the process of securing legal custody. This will enable her to receive the social security payments that rightfully belong to her children. While she navigates this important legal step, we helped with her rent to ensure her family remains stable. We are hopeful that this legal advocacy will bring lasting positive change to her situation.

Helping Hayley Through an Unexpected Challenge

Hayley (Glasses) is a 64-year-old woman who typically manages her finances independently despite her disability. However, an unexpectedly high auto repair bill recently threw her budget off balance, causing her to fall behind on her water bill. She was able to cover part of the bill herself but needed assistance with the remainder.

We were happy to help bridge that gap for Hayley. It was a reminder that even the most self-sufficient among us can face unexpected challenges, and we were grateful to provide the support she needed to get back on track.

Celebrating Sandy's Recovery Journey

Sandy's story is one of remarkable transformation and commitment. As a recovering alcoholic, she has built an excellent record at Oxford House, demonstrating her dedication to the recovery program. When a bicycle accident recently left her temporarily unable to work, she fell behind on her rent. However, she has since recovered and is actively participating in vocational rehabilitation, with employment on the horizon.

We were pleased to help Sandy with one week's rent during this transitional period. Her commitment to recovery and her progress toward employment are truly inspiring. It was an honor to provide support as she continues building her new life in sobriety.
